Weekend Update With the HSO

When you write your own blog, you get to say want you want.  This morning I do want to brag just a little bit.  We went last night to the opening performance of the season for the Hartford Symphony Orchestra.  I am a classical music fan and try to see a couple shows a year.  But what this one extra-special is that the HSO allowed the Connecticut Youth Symphony Orchestra to play two pieces with them.  And my son is part of the CYS!  It was a special night as we got to see him on stage (he is 15) in a tuxedo on stage with the musicians.  Somehow my wifola had gotten us great seats, so we had a terrific view.

The music was so uplifting and powerful. I think as I get older, I appreciate these things more and more. As our world becomes more digital, the local arts are more and more at risk.  It would be a sadder world without them.

It was a strange week in the markets.  I would have guessed that I had a good week, as the final two days were so strong.  But I actually gave a little ground, down about 29 basis points on the week.  Still am up over 30% year to date and am beating the R3K by precisely eight points.

Transactions

This was my first week in a while of material transactions.  In hindsight (at least 3 days worth) I had pretty good timing as I made my buys before the market started to go up on Thursday.  There were certainly some stocks I could have bought that went up more, but c'est la vie!  All my purchases were adds: ABR  IPHIG-WTRIGCSQAOD and TC-PT  Ok, I did get a few shares in SFXE, but hard to count that. Overall, the additions did well - up 2.8% in aggregate.  HIG-WT was the big winner (and my second largest buy), popping 8.4%.

Dividend Portfolio

Not sure why I always list this portfolio first.  It is the one doing the worst.

MFI Tranches

These continue to be ever so solid.  Take a hard look at the November Tranche.  It has just over a month left before I say adieu and grey it out.

The table above shows overall performance.  You can see up 39.2%.  I am starting the new row so you can see back into the past, with Current Tranche, previous tranche and overall gain.  So August 2012 was up 14.1%. August 2013 is already up 15.3% and combined they are up 31.5%.  The $25,000 initial investment amounts are fictional and created so the initial amount was $100,000 for easy math.

Discretionary Portfolio

MFI is up year to date by 38%. That is a stunning number considering I was only 50% into the tranches at the start of the year.  I then added the February and May tranches to complete the seasons.  I can not really say how much my discretionary portfolio is up as I have not really tracked it that was and I am too lazy to do so.  Suffice it to say that it has been very good.  It is really starting to klic (hah, hah, a little stock ticker humor for you).
