I think I am starting to get slap happy. That is a sure sign of irrational exuberance. As my readers know, I have been watching the IPO space pretty closely since mid July. I have gotten into two through Fidelity, QEPM and SFXE. Frankly the number of shares I got in each one was hardly worth the brokerage I had to pay fidelity. S today I tried a different tack. I felt the VJET IPO was going to be successful. It opened around $27, but quickly fell to around $22. I bought some shares at 22.09. Not a ton, kind of a half investment for me. After watching it for an hour, I sold at 24.13 for a quick 9% profit. I felt pretty smart until I saw it move north of $28 this afternoon. So it could have been a one day gain of 30% if I had had any courage. Oh well.
Batting .900
But it was a very good week, up 3.2% overall. And so I am now up over 4% for the month of August. CF, a stock in my mfi portfolio was up nicely on increasing their dividend by 150%. That means of my 20 MFI stock picks, 18 are beating the R3K. That is stunning to be batting .900. I have always felt that if you picked two winners for every loser you'd be doing well.
I did add a new stock to my idea list for the November MFI tranche that is fast approaching. The symbol is AWRE and it looks very interesting. Smaller cap stock, so don't all you bid it way up in the next three weeks!
GTAT was up to 8.63 today. I am not sure if I mentioned it, but it officially my all time most profitable stock in pure dollars and on a percentage basis. I am pleased as often on the more speculative plays like GTAT, I hedge my initial position a bit, but this time I bought a full sized position. There was a pretty good pro GTAT article today (Why GT Advanced Technologies Shares Could Triple By 2015). It felt a little too much like "she's going to the moon", but it does give a feel for some of the catalysts. I have always said $9 was a good target for the stock. I would not change that unless I saw a real uptick in backlog for them.
Once or twice a year I fund my kid's college funds. Each time I pick two or three stocks and they have to be stocks I am comfortable with for the next five years (at least). Thus far my results have been very very good.
2009: ACE, CB and VR - up in aggregate by 179%
2010: same three stocks - up 95%
2011: same three stocks - up 58%
2012: GNW and LNC - up 121%
2012(b): GNW and VR - up 89%
2013: GNW and LNC - up 67%
I am thrilled that the results have been so good. It will certainly go a long ways towards funding their college 100% and if they have a little left over at the end, it can help them towards 1st car or home. I am thinking about one final funding here in 2013. I am wrestling with what stocks to pick. I am leaning towards RIG and IBM, but I would like to jump in post a correction, so I may change my mind as prices change.
