Top Stocks Under $300m Market Cap

There has been some good discussion on why Magic Formula Investing has not been "breaking away" from the broader markets, despite now having 7+ years.  I commented that subsets have done well, specifically stocks with market caps > $1 billion and stocks that pay a 2.6% dividend or higher.  Of course, in JG's back testing, he looked at smaller market cap stocks and they certainly did not drag down the results.

The official website only shows stocks down to $50m market cap, which is actually quite small.  I am not a huge investor, but when I try to buy stocks that small, I almost feel like a market mover.  You have to be careful and use limit orders.

Here is my typical list of caveats I produce when making my lists:

I decided to use this weekend to update my list.  It is never too early to start looking forward to my next tranche (May 6th, 2014) as I approach new tranche.  We had a surprising amount of snow here this past week, a bit over a foot.. As my readers know, I like to replicate the official MFI site (Magic Formula Investing) every now and then.  I add a few extra elements such as (1) country, (2) yahoo yield, (3) my calculated stats, (4) ranking and (5) 200 stocks.

If anyone could think of any other stats that might be interesting, then let me know.  I did add this time price to book value.  The data is from FINVIZ.  I would actually prefer price to tangible book, if anyone knows where to get that (I am too lazy to calculate it) then please let me know.

I think my approach is pretty darned accurate.  I use Compustat as well and formulas that were devised by a team on the Yahoo Groups board and detailed in my blog (MFI Diary: The Calculation).  I also cross reference my list with the official top 50 and they are almost always within my top 100 (I have more on my list as I do not exclude some stocks the official site excludes, such as some stocks in other countries).

Be aware that this is all formula driven, the dividend yields should definitely be verified as they come from Yahoo Finance which is not always reliable.  The main financials (from Compustat) have seemed very reliable to me.

I am too lazy to re-type it, but you get the gist.  It may take a while to run my workbook.  Hotel wifi is not always blazing fast.

Certainly an eclectic listing.  I would strongly suggest caution on any and all on this list, especially anything in China (ZA for instance). Some names on here I have owned in the past (MTEX was on some of the older MFI portfolios as was CHKE). Wait, I also owned PRLS and WILC at one time.
