Weekend Update - September 21st 2013

Another Week Rushes Past

Wow, the third quarter is almost over.  Feeling very fall-like hew in New England.  It was 42 degrees one morning when I drove to work.  The new Apple iPhone came out this week.  It isn't revolutionary, but it seems like a nice upgrade.  My wife wants one.  She is tired of struggling with her Motorola Droid.

Also on the AAPL front, they released their new iOS this week.  Now I am not a geek, but I have to admit I was looking forward to iOS 7.  I wanted to check out the new Apple Radio.  I am listening to the Diana Krall station right now and so far I am a fan.  The bigger sells for me are (1) it means one less app cluttering my screen and (2) there are no commercials for me as I have iCloud.  I want to make sure they have variety and do not repeat too much.  And I am sure AAPL would be thrilled to know I have also already bought a song (Iris by the Goo-Goo Dolls).

Transactions

I have actually been letting it ride lately.  I am pretty comfortable with my cash/stock ratio.  I am not excited about buying right now as the market feels (as Warren Buffett said) "fairly valued".  But I also do not want to sell much as most of my positions are either (1) core holdings, (2) not fairly valued (IMHO) or (3) have gone up so much I do not want to incur ST CG taxes.

I took a look and for the month, all I have done was sold SLCA and GAME on the 4th (in hindsight selling SLCA was a mistake as it is up about 10% since the sale). Then I took 25% those sales and bought equal amounts of SBSINTC and ACAS the next day.  Then this week I increased my holdings in RIG by 20%.  So I still am sitting on 24% cash.  I should mention my concept of cash briefly.  That is actual cash in my Fidelity checking account.  So it does vary all the time (as I get paid, pay bills etc).

New Stocks on Watch List

My astute readers may have noticed I finessed a new name onto a list on Thursday. RFIL is a new micro-cap stock on the MFI list that looks interesting.  They actually pay a 4.2% dividend, so I am considering them as a dividend add.  Also, on Ed's Talking Stock, NDZ has been mentioned and it looks pretty cheap.  Finally, a healthcare micro-cap (CRTX) looks like a decent combination of growth and value.

Okay, enough chatter.  Here are where my portfolios stand at the close on Friday:

This portfolio is obviously the "weakest link".  Unfortunately, it is also my largest portfolio as it is about 50% of my invested assets.  That is why I am toying with the idea of MFI/Dividend mash-up.  RIG, TGONF and STO are the real laggards, though as the Monkees say, "I'm (still) a Believer".

To be up 36.2% is phenomenal when you consider I just got back in the game on August 15 2012 and worked my way in over 4 quarters.  In fact, if you were in the MFI Index going back to 2006 you'd be up 60%, so I did not miss too mcuh of the "party".

Discretionary Portfolio

Stock Gain Cost Price
GTAT 142.5%           3.39           8.22
GNW 71.0%           7.10         12.15

KLIC 3.3%         11.15         11.52
BAC-WTA 17.8%           5.35           6.30
HIG-WT 6.8%         20.89         22.31
QEPM 7.7%         21.00         22.61

That GTAT gain is really better as I bought at 2.73 in March.  I sold it at 3.41 in April and then rebought same # of shares a week later (too bad I did not double down!).  GTAT has now become my single largest holding, despite my only making an "average" investment in them.

Dividends By Quarter

I thought I would close with a chart that shows my dividends (actual and projected) by quarter for past three years.  There is a reason I have the dividend portfolio - I am working on building an income stream for retirement.
