Sleepy Weekend Update

Sleepy Weekend Update

Could not sleep last night, so have gotten up at 4 am - will have a cup of coffee, listen to the rain and type my blog.  Last night was the first night I "slept" post-surgery without any narcotics.  Woke up around 2:30, was warm (we are fixing AC this week and windows closed due to torrential rain) and leg could not find a comfortable spot.

I did watch a good movie (I had started it yesterday):

Adventureland

It is a cute coming of age movie with Kirsten Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg before they were famous.  With my surgery, I decided to try re-subscribing to Netflix.  I had tried them 2 1/2 years ago and I just was not pleased with their streaming selection. But now with House of Cards and then doing some digging on the Internet, I have a list of shows I am actually excited to start watching.

My Netflix List

Substantially OT, but here are the movies I have put on my list this week:

Netflix List
Clueless
Revenge of the Bridesmaids
Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason
A Fish Called Wanda
Adventureland
In the Loop
Punch-Drunk Love
Say Anything...
Mud
Zodiac
Pain & Gain
The Conversation
Dead Man
Fish Tank
Mitt
The Queen of Versailles
Man on Wire
The Thin Blue Line
The Usual Suspects
Glengarry Glen Ross
In Bruges
2 Days in Paris
Bernie
The Trip

Weekend Overview

As I mentioned the other day, it felt like a bad week - but it was ok.  I was up 0.5%

That makes me up 4.75% on the year (R3K is up 1.75%). GTAT has once again supplanted GNW as my #1 holding (by a whisker).  I think my only new stock on the week was KERX.  I actually spent more of the week selling.

MFI Portfolio

I figured out the other day that my 35 MFI picks in my first 7 tranches (excluding the most recent May 6th tranche that is brand new), that 23 of them have beaten the R3K.  That is a solid rate.  My most recent tranche is also off to a very nice start (helped by CSCO this week).  It is already up 2.4% and 4 of the 5 picks are beating R3K.  Early days, but still, always encouraging to have a decent start.

I read a very bullish review of SNDK prospects for the next 2 to 3 years (SanDisk Investor's Day Presentations - The Best Makes The Case For Even Better).  They are a very impressive company in a great space right now.  I think I may add to another tranche later this year assuming they do not run away and hide.

You can see my MFI portfolio continues to stretch its lead over R3K.  Ahead now by 30.6%.

Dividend Portfolio

I will tell you, I have not run this portfolio very effectively.  Pretty much all the stocks I have sold in the past year have gone on the bigger and better things.  The table below shows all my dividend portfolio sales in past 12 months (the CSCO share count is low for some reason, I will need to check on that).

Total         10.68           11.97 12.1%

You can see overall, the stocks I have sold have on average went up 12% post my sale.  Clearly SLCA is a big piece of this, but there are other misses as well. In addition, this just shows prices - I also missed dividends (though arguably I have reinvested in other dividend stocks with similar yields).

Here is my current dividend portfolio, still has managed to be up 2.4% this year - despite my faux pas.  The fact that this portfolio is starting to outperform, is likely a direct reflection on T bill rates dropping back to about 2.5%.  Dividends stocks act like bonds and become more valuable as benchmark interest rates drop.

Discretionary Portfolio

Pretty funny, as you know one of my largest discretionary holdings is GNW.  There was a video posted the other day of an interview with their CFO Martin Klein (Genworth CFO: Strong Balance Sheet Underpinning Stock Surge).  I had to watch it as I know Marty.  In my first job out of college, we worked together as entry level actuaries in Louisville Ky at a company called Capital Holding.  He looks great (kept his hair and it isn't grey - bastard!) and he comes across as a knowledgeable CFO.  He was always very, very smart - so I am not surprised he has become a senior officer at a S&P 500 company.

Wrap

I think we can all it a wrap.  It is light outside, maybe I can fall asleep now.
