Two New Stocks

I added two new stocks to my portfolio as I re-approach being 100% invested.

SNDK - a company we're all familiar with. They make those little memory cards in all our cameras, smart phones etc. They have dropped from a high around $50 to about $38. I suppose the issue is that this space is largely becoming a commodity, but they seem cheap to me. I will confess that my success in the tech-space has not been stellar.

STRA - this is a "for profit" education play. You would have to be living under a rock to have missed the crashing and burning of these education stocks as the govt clamps down on financial support. I am essentially assuming that the selling is overdone as STRA has fallen from around $240 this summer to $128 today. They also almost meet my criteria of dividends, with a 2.3% yield. They have had a good history of raising dividends.

In my overall top 200 rankings this past weekend, SNDK was #33 and STRA was #118.

Gravity Comes Into Play

After going up for eight straight days, yesterday was a tough day for the portfolio, dropping around 3%. Obviously the drop in the market was a key, but the Chinese component of my portfolio was under duress. I suppose it was due to the rate increase in China plus some profit taking. I still REALLY like NEWN. They are trading under $6 and did not fully participate in the recent rally. They are one of the few Chinese firms that I follow that gives earning guidance in eps - which gives me comfort they are not going to dilute shares greatly. Here is a link to recent guidance (New Energy Systems Group Reaffirms 2010 Guidance and Comments on Favorable Outlook for 2011). In that press release, they affirm $1.23 per share (for a $5.94 stock). In additional they are bullish about 2011 saying:
  • "We continue to generate very strong organic growth within all four of our businesses, including Anytone, NewPower, our battery distribution business, and our battery shells and caps segment. In particular, our Anytone business is rapidly gaining market share within China due to strong demand for our back-up battery chargers. As a result, we are extremely confident in achieving or exceeding our previously issued guidance for 2010, and anticipate very strong top and bottom-line growth in 2011."
Along with being an approved supplier of Apple parts (New Energy Systems Group Announces Plans to Produce Full Line of Backup Power Systems and Accessories for Apple's Mobile Digital Devices) that is enough for me.

Update of Top 30 Mechanical Portfolio

The only new stock to my mechanical portfolios this weekend was ANSW to the top 50. Open stocks continue to trail the benchmarks, though the gap has recently tightened.

Interesting on the SansDisk pick. I have been in both STX and WDC over the years and they seem cheap, cheap, cheap also. Specifically WDC which has a ton of cash on hand and also has solid earnings. At some point they need to do something with that cash so am hoping for either a distribution or a buyback.
