Monster Mash

It seems appropriate to me on this Friday before Halloween that one of better stocks of the day was Monster Worldwide (MWW). They were up about 25% on better than expected earnings/outlook. Now I know I can be a bit of a "flipper", but when companies related to employment start doing better, that seems bullish for the overall economy.

MWW was at one point an MFI stock. It was funny, but when things got really bad (the market went nuts) in 2008 and the 1st half of 2009, some very good companies became very cheap. Heck, I even remember Apple coming on the list in the mid eighties for about a week (why didn't I buy them?). I do wonder if MFI isn't at its very best when things are at their very worst?

In my tracking portfolios, you had five chances at MWW. Here is how you would have fared holding them for a year:

Date Initial Price End Price Percent Change
11/26/2008 $ 11.47 $ 14.92 30%
12/26/2008 $ 11.42 $ 17.40 52%
1/23/2009 $ 9.69 $ 15.88 64%
2/27/2009 $ 6.59 $ 13.95 112%
3/27/2009 $ 8.67 $ 16.91 95%

Note they closed at $18.06 today.

Quick Look At Past Week

My portfolio had another strong week, up 2.3%. My notes yesterday about STRA seemed spot on as the stock spiked about 9% today. They were alone amongst education stocks going up, so I think the market liked what they saw in yesterday's earnings report. I see no reason they won't go up another 10% in the next few weeks.

Here is a table showing the performance of each of my stocks. Note it excludes VALU which I sold mid-week and was up over 20%.

Transactions and Miscellaneous Notes

Besides adding additional SNDK and STRA this week, I did sell the CMFO shares I bought a year ago today. I decided to buy NVMI in a bit of front running. They are a stock that was on my top 50 list, when I first made my own list in August. Since then, they have gone up 28%. They are scheduled to announce earnings on Monday evening. Reading through their press releases, I think they'll be a no-brainer to be back in the top 50 after they announce. So I bought some shares around $5.94.

I know I was talking about AZN, but I went for a little more pizazz.

Finally, it was a relatively big day on strong earnings for some old favorites as the October 30th tracking portfolio from 2009 hits a year this weekend. QCOR was up about 11%. And TNAV was up almost 30%. DECK was up 7.6% and DLX was up 6%. I need to go back and look at DLX on earnings day throughout the years. I swear that they ALWAYS go up at least 5%.

Later!
