It did not feel like a stellar week for my portfolio. The crash of NUS definitively was a downer, even if I did mitigate the loss. I was also relatively active with transactions, but none of them have born any fruit yet - not that I expect a stock to go up just because I bought them. Also, INTC disappointed investors again. KLIC also dropped a lot. So it was not a stellar week.
Doing the math, I was a bit surprised that I "only" lost about 1%. It was not all negative, TC-PT and GA actually had strong weeks.
MFI Portfolio
The factor adjusted loss of $10,000 from NUS made it an uphill week for this portfolio from the get-go. I have a streak of 5 straight months where this portfolio has beaten the R3K, but that looks seriously in jeopardy as I was beating the R3K overall by 28.2 points on January 1st and that lead is now 25.2 points. Obviously the January drop of 16% (before I sold) of NUS has been a headwind, but interestingly KLIC is quietly down 15%.
My February 2013 tranche only has a few days left. I am actually starting to be pretty excited about some of my potential choices. I think at the end of the month, I will have a decent 5 stocks!

Discretionary Portfolio
Not a great week here either, as KLIC is a pretty large holding and nothing really popped up. I was very active this week with this portfolio. I bought SIRI, C and RIOM. Then I also added to my KLIC.
SIRI is a play on Liberty Media (which owns 52% of SIRI) putting a buy out bid on them. It feels a bit like self-dealing, and stock advocates agree, such as Ralph Nader (Nader Assembling Shareholder-Activism Group). I think there will be substantial pressure on them to increase the bid, or else face a litany of lawsuits (Sirius XM Sued by Shareholders Over Liberty Buyout Offer).
C is a TBTF bank that is trading a bit under book value. It has long been the ugly duckling of the large banks, but they have new management and still a strong retail franchise. With their drop post-earnings, felt like a good buying opportunity.
RIOM is a small, but very profitable miner. I have watched it for 6 months or so and it seems to have bottomed out.

Dividend Portfolio
I guess it was a decent week here, largely helped by TC-PT rocketing up 27%! INTC was actually up slightly over the week. They ran up the day or two before earnings, so it really was not the crash it felt like.
I did buy some shares in NTC, a CT Municipal CEF. It yields a bit under 6% (tax free) so is pretty attractive. I have not included it (yet) in my dividend portfolio. I actually plan to include it, but I have not built my full position yet. It is pretty lightly traded and my bid price was only partially filled. It is likely that a position like NTC will make it more difficult to beat bench marks, as in reality over time 6% is as good as it gets. But my Diary is not just about beating benchmarks, but I am also trying to illustrate how to build a portfolio. And even in today's world, that should include some bonds or bond-like securities.

I hope everyone has a great weekend. Some good football games on. I will be taking my daughter ice skating today and will be going to a concert this evening.
