Instant Gratification Is Always Nice

Well, so far, about 45 days into 2013, it is clear that if you have been long that you have made money.  Everything is up, up, up - which makes us all look smart.

I looked and I have made 20 purchases in 2013 and on average they are up over 4%.  The most recent "success" has been ABR.  I bought them just last week (the 12th) and they are already up almost 10%.

Of course it does seem the markets are going up too quickly.  What was the saying I read the other day?  "Markets take the escalator up and the elevator down".  It has been a long escalator ride.  Here are my 2013 purchases:

Date Purchased Date Sold Stock Purchase Price Current/Sold Price Pct Gain
01/02/13 01/10/13 SD $6.39 $6.89 7.9%
01/02/13
CIM $2.61 $2.99 14.6%
01/03/13 02/15/13 GTAT $3.53 $3.68 4.5%
01/03/13 01/04/13 NUGT $10.14 $10.19 0.5%
01/08/13
GNW $8.10 $9.11 12.5%
01/09/13 01/16/13 SCO $39.46 $38.84 -1.6%
01/11/13
CIM $2.80 $2.99 6.9%
01/16/13 01/22/13 CDE $23.85 $24.42 2.4%
01/22/13
AOD $3.90 $4.00 3.3%
01/23/13 02/06/13 VECO $33.27 $32.85 -1.3%
01/29/13 01/29/13 NUGT $8.09 $8.23 1.7%
01/31/13 02/01/13 NUGT $7.76 $7.87 1.5%
02/01/13
AAPL $450.60 $459.99 2.7%
02/01/13
GA $6.10 $6.15 0.8%
02/01/13
STRZA $16.06 $19.24 19.8%
02/01/13
CA $25.07 $24.98 0.6%
02/01/13
NUS $41.94 $41.41 -0.5%
02/12/13
CIM $3.08 $2.99 -2.9%
02/12/13
ABR $7.18 $7.88 9.7%
02/13/13
SD $5.74 $6.01 4.7%

As you can see, they fall in distinct categories.  Dividend portfolio (like CIM, AOD and ABR). Then MFI (AAPL, GA, STRZA, CA and NUS). And discretionary (GNW and GTAT). Then finally what I will call swing (the Talking Ed stocks), SD, NUGT, VECO and CDE.

I have not included reinvested dividend purchases,  though they are also up 4% so far (the ones where I took ownership in 2013). So this rising market seems to have plenty of breadth.

As I mentioned last week (MFI Diary: Rooting For a Bear?), I do have a group of about 11 stocks to buy/add on a pullback.  ABR was the first in that group that I bought. I will try to be patient.

More later!
