Sitting here in front of a fire on Saturday evening sipping a Dark & Stormy. Snow is coming down pretty steadily here in North Central Connecticut. I just stepped outside and I'd say we have 4.5 inches. I suspect tomorrow morning we'll have a solid eight inches of snow. I don't mind on a sleepy weekend between Christmas and New Years. Here is a quick peak at how my portfolios are performing. First the Dividend portfolio:

Pretty hard to complain about 22% on the year. All-in-all, it has been one of my most successful investing years. I do feel that this year I moved my portfolio from being a bit spastic and out of control to something more thoughtful. I will try not to make any more incredibly stupid mistakes.
Then here is my MFI portfolio.

You will note that I am trailing the benchmark Russell 3000 in both portfolios. That is disappointing, but at least not a disaster and it is early days.
I expect 2013 to continue to be an active buying year for me. I am about 20% in cash overall. And I expect to raise the equivalent of another 20% during 2013 from savings etc. So I will be looking for new stock ideas or adding to current positions.
I went back and re-read my write-ups of my 30+ holdings. I would not say there are any I am uncomfortable holding, though SDS will not be a long-term play. MSFT is one I am thinking long and hard about. It is a big position and I like Windows 8. But it does seem that the move is clearly away from windows-based machines and people more and more are using tablets and smartphones. That will cut into MSFT profits. So if MSFT starts 2013 strong, I may pull trigger relatively quickly (except on my MFI holding).
I also plan (early in the year) to buy two or three stock positions for my kids college funds. These have done exceedingly well (I have never sold anything) since 2009 when I moved from Index funds and mutual funds.
Year | Gain |
Kids 2012a | 15.3% |
Kids 2012 | 19.0% |
Kids 2011 | 27.6% |
Kids 2010 | 58.6% |
Kids 2009 | 126.6% |
Total | 43.1% |
Not sure yet what I will buy. I am still a believer in life insurers if you have a 5 year horizon, so LNC and GNW (my 2012 initial buys) will be strong candidates. On the P&C side, I think AXS has gotten cheap and then on the Health side, Cigna is a reasonable candidate. That will likely be my short list. We'll see.
Hope everyone roots on my Cowboys tomorrow night!
