Snowy New England morn here in the Nutmeg State (really, is that the best we could do?). Actually getting windy outside and a layer of ice is forming on top the 5 inches of snow. Good thing I have absolutely nothing to do today!
I joined Twitter a couple of months ago. I have to say that I really like it. I have not yet tweeted, but following people and organizations (like NPR) is leading me to see and think about things I wasn't thinking about. Also, I have found a few people that are truly funny (in 140 words or less).
One person I follow is called "taxgirl". I started following her as she had some good insights on the Fiscal Cliff. Here is a "re-tweet" I saw from her recently about the US Federal Budget that really put things in perspective:
Diane Hessan
U.S. Budget in our terms: Income: $21,000 Spent:
$38,200 New Debt: $16,500 Credit Card borrowing: $142,700 Budget cuts so
far: $38.
Then here is one of the funnier people I am following:
Josh Gondelman
Put on a little holiday weight. I've been eating since Groundhog Day.
MLM Thoughts
One of the stocks on my MFI "watch list" has been NUS.This is Nu Skin, a Multi-level marketing
(MLM) company that sells personal care goods (like cosmetics, anti-aging lotions etc) worldwide. They grew revenues 22% last quarter and grew earnings 15%. Since I put them on my watch list, they have tumbled 26% from $44 to $32. What gives? Is this a buying opportunity?
The answer may lie with Bill Ackman. He is a high-profile investor who makes highly concentrated investments. I saw where he invested $60m in General Growth Properties and the bottom of the market that is now worth over $1b. Nice. He came out a year ago very bullish on the Hong Kong dollar (not sure how that has worked. He is a huge fan of JCP (not sure I get that, I was in a JCP twice over the holidays and it is not a great shopping experience). His latest mark is HLF, which is a stock that has often been on MFI screens.
HLF is also a MLM firm. These are firms where you make money by selling goods, but also by recruiting more people to sell the goods. Think Avon, Mary-Kay or Tupperware. It has kind of a chain letter impact in that if you recruit 7 people, who each recruit 7 people who each recruit 7 people, you have a lot of people. Anyway, Ackman has bought up 20% of HLF as a short position. That is a huge bet. They are currently worth about $3b, when he initiated his short position, they were much higher... perhaps $7b. So 20% of $7b is (...carry the one...), $1.4b.
Now that is short bet is in place, he has come out guns a-blazing, bashing the company. He gave a 300+ page presentation (Bill Ackman's Full Case Against Herbalife) on why their actual value is zero (probably over-reaching). I would encourage people to read through the pdf. I only read about 130 pages, but it is some excellent research in my mind (though clearly slanted). I think the slide that hit home for me was how they determine their revenues, it seemed like a very make-believe number that in no way actually comes close to tracking what cash actually comes in the door.
Anyway, I would not touch HLF with the proverbial 10ft pole, but not sue what to do about NUS. I have noted that if one company in an industry is using improper approaches (think education stocks or home care stocks) then it is not a great leap to assume others are doing it as well. I have until February to decide, but I will have to roll up my sleeves and see if NUS uses some of the same accounting treatments.

Dividend Stock Performance
I put together a similar chart on my Dividend Stocks. Note that if I bought during the quarter, I show the price I bought them at, not the Oct 1st price. I guess 3.5% for the quarter is pretty decent. The Russell 3000 is down about one percent in the same stretch.
