Weekend Update August 24th 2013

Weekend Update

The year continues and we approach the 2/3rd mark.  My portfolio continues to outperform and I am having one of my best years ever.  My decision at the start of the year to avoid retail certainly looked good this week as many retailers got hit pretty hard:

Staples Plunges Most Since 2011 on Profit Forecast Cut
Abercrombie & Fitch Horror Show Sinks Shares
Aeropostale Plunges 13%
Wal-Mart and Target Have It Just as Bad as the American Consumer
Sears Struggles Continue, Lampert 'Disappointed' In Weak Quarter
J.C. Penney: Weak Results Support the Bankruptcy Thesis

Of course there were some exceptions as GPS, KSS and TJX held up decently.  And the big box hardware stores of HD and LOW have been rocking.

Overall

I am now up just shy of 24% on the year. That is more than a five point spread over the Russell 3000.  My MFI tranches are the biggest driver (hooray) of the out performance, but some individual names in my discretionary portfolio, such as GTAT and GNW have really added to the bottom line.

MFI Tranches

My overall MFI investment is now more than 11 points above just going with the R3K.  Obviously having a double in NUS has really helped, but it is not really "lucky" that I have a double as 7 stocks in my MFI index are up 90% or more in 2013 (out of 50).

As you can see, even my very recent August 15th portfolio is off to a snappy start.  I did look to see how my Aug 15 2012 tranche has done since Aug 15th (as they were boosted by MSFT's Steve Ballmer's retirement announcement).  It is up 1.9%, so the transfer to the new stocks is all good thus far.

Sometimes I think about adding a fifth tranche as MFI does seem to be working.  To give my readers a feel of my current splits, I am allocated

Portfolio Allocation
MFI 22%
Dividend 42%
Discretionary 16%
Cash 20%

If MFI is my "best", should more funds go that way?  Of course I am buying MFI stocks in my other portfolios, just not following the MFI  investment rules - I have AAPL also in dividend portfolio, KLIC and GTAT in discretionary.

Dividend Portfolio

These guys are my "underachievers", but they are still doing okay.  Up over 14% on the year, hampered by a few poorly timed buys such as FCX and NEM and by some stocks that have bond-like characteristics, which are not exactly thriving in a potential tapering environment.

Discretionary Portfolio

I did add to ACAS this week and I bought GAME yesterday at $4.50.

Stock Gain Cost Price
GNW 72.8%           7.10         12.28
GTAT 97.3%           3.39           6.69
ACAS 2.9%         12.70         13.06
KLIC -0.1%         11.15         11.14
GAME -0.2%           4.50           4.49
BAC-WTA 20.3%           5.10           6.13
HIG-WT 5.4%         20.70         21.82
QEPM 7.4%         21.00         22.55

Note the GTAT gain is really much better (not that it isn't good already) as I actually bought the shares March 4th at 2.73.  I sold at 3.41 in April but then re-bought a week later at $3.39.  So am actually up on initial investment by over 140%.  I also put in buy orders this week for more HIG and BAC warrants should they pullback 5% or so.

That is enough for now.  I will try to post again later this weekend.
