Weekend Update - 3/9/13

Well, it has been quite a ride up.  This week we hit the all time high for the Dow.  My portfolio is up over 10% in 2013 and it was up another 9% the last 6 weeks of 2012.  I know CNBC must love it, as their rating always go up in a rising market.

Every day now, people opine on what will happen next.  Frankly I have not a clue.  I am sitting about 25% in cash, so I actually would not "mind" stocks getting a bit cheaper.  I suspect a lot of other people are thinking the same thing.  So any pullback could be shallow.  Instead, I will likely look for targeted value opportunities.  It is a bit more work, but has worked okay for me in 2013.  I think I got stocks like CIM, ABR, FCX and AOD at pretty good prices.

Upcoming Dividends

As my readers know, I try (at times) to focus on dividends from my portfolio rather than total value.  I find total value can be arbitrary, it hot markets it is too high and in bear markets it is too low and can cause undue stress.  If instead you focus on dividends, as long as those are constantly going up I believe everything else is noise.

The back 1/2 of March is pretty busy on the dividend front.  Here is what I show as on tap:

Stock Shares x Date Div/Share Est New Shares Amount
CSQ         5,519 3/11/13  $         0.07              36.00       386.31

AOD       12,968 3/19/13  $         0.03              86.00       350.14
CIM       20,000 3/27/13  $         0.09            580.00    1,800.00
OIBAX         3,972 3/31/13  $         0.02              12.00          79.45
O             563 3/31/13  $         0.18                2.00       101.80
JPM         1,684 4/2/13  $         0.30              10.00       505.12

I am especially looking forward to that first juicy CIM dividend.  It yields over 11% and is a very large holding for me.  Hopefully, it is sustainable.

Dividend Portfolio

On the year, my dividend portfolio has actually not quite kept up with the averages, as I am up just 8.4%.  AAPL is one big reason for the under-performance, but I also have a few hybrid type holdings (read bonds) and these are not high-fliers. That is ok.  As I state many times, I am not trying to get rich quickly.

Current Yields

My current portfolio is yielding 4.8%.  Not bad.  Interestingly, it is yielding 5.9% to my cost basis.  This is where I look at what i paid for the portfolio rather than what it is currently worth.

As I harp upon regularly, to me it is not just about the current dividend, but the potential for increases in dividends.  "Raising the Dividend" are amongst my favorite three words (do not tell my wife).  Here are some increases I have tracked:
