Ouch - CHCG

Well, I had had a nice run going, but on Monday got slammed by CHCG and CDII even though it was a big up day for the market. CHCG announced their earnings on Friday evening (China 3C Group Reports First Quarter 2009 Financial Results). Revenues were up but eps was down (due to competition) from 11 cents to 7 cents. The stock dropped 25% and is down from a recent high of $1.60 to a shade over $1.03. I am holding, but disappointed. Still 7 cents x 4 would be 28 cents a share in a year... which for a $1.03 stock with about 55 cents a share in cash is not exactly something to sell, sell, sell! So I will be patient, grasshopper.

CDII lost money (China Direct Industries Reports Financial Results for the First Quarter of 2009) after having a terrific 1st quarter last year. They are down from $1.41 to about $1.35, no big deal. They are tied to the price of magnesium and have a bucket of cash as well, so I am not worried.

While yesterday was a bad day, I almost made it up today as my portfolio was up about 2%. TC was the big gainer (up about 10%) and is becoming a dispproportionate share of my portfolio as it is up about 150% since I bought it this year. QXM was up almost 8% as well.

I did add a new stock to my Mechanical portfolio, which is up over 6% in real terms (yes Martha it is making money) and is over 16 points ahead of the benchmark S&P 500. The new stock is IPHS. They are a basic material company that seems to be headed for rough waters. I will not be buying them. I list my performance further down below. It is a bit out of date (I just noticed) as I did not give the S&P credit for end of March dividned of 56 cents. I will fix that this weekend.

Also an update on ADY, which I mentioned in my last post about Chinese stocks and how they had just had a great quarter. They had closed that Thursday at $18.43 and have almost doubled to $35 today. I did buy some at the opening bell Friday for $24, but wish I had bought more.

Finally, I did go to the Preakness over the weekend and saw the great race between Rachel Alexandra (I did pick her) and Mine that Bird.

Big horse racing afficionado, eh Marsh? Are you really Richard Prout? I like to imagine you doing the REAL Preakness running of the port-a-potties, but I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that the actuary in you won't let you do it...

I turn 50 this year and my birthday wish was to attend all 3 races of the triple crown. I had great seats at the derby, just grandstand at the Preakness, but we did venture into the infield.

Marsh, I know you've been following Chinese stocks recently, and I think you said you're an investor in CSKI. I am as well. Have you seen this recent article about it?

Any thoughts?

Albert, this guy has been bashing CSKI and playing on investor fears for a number of months. I think the fact that they have hired PwC at all is a positive step. Of course I'd be happier if PwC was the primary auditor as well. That was a big plus for CAST for me. I will say that Saytem in India used a big 4 firm and got away with a billion $ scam.

Some of the answers from the conference call could be a language thing, so that doesn't really bother me.

All-in-all, I do keep my eyes open and pulled back about 1/2 my CSKI when they went over $15. I do think it is prudent not to let my investment there get out-of-balance.
