In Pittsburgh this morning visiting Carnegie-Mellon. The home of the Scotties. This was my best week in recent memory, up over 4%. Just everything went right. Actually looking back at my history, dollar wise this was my best week ever. So I am now up 4.2% on the year, while the R3K is up 2.3%. My MFI Formula is up 6.7%, but MFI select is still down 1.7%.
MFI Select
As I mentioned, these guys are still down 1.7% for the year. And that includes 5% in the month of February. January was just a tough month. Recall how sharply my Feb 1st tranche sold off in January. Just for fun, here is the tranche that just closed:
2/1/14 Stocks | Start | Current | Dividend | Pct Gain | R3K Gain |
$17.13 | $20.90 | $0.20 | 23.1% | 12.9%

WNR | $39.11 | $37.13 | $3.04 | 2.7% | 12.9% |
Totals | 8.5% | 12.9% |
You can see it lost by 4.4 percentage points. Since I closed it, these five stocks are up 9.2%! R3K is up 5.2%, so if I had held two more weeks, I'd still be behind, but just by a whisker (18.5% to 18.8%).

MFI Formula
The formula approach continues to do very well. I commented in past weeks that I felt that perhaps I had just been lucky as the stocks I didn't pick were not doing as well. That has reversed to some extent. Here are the two tranches:
10/1/2014 Stocks | Start | Current | Dividend | Pct Gain | R3K Gain |
BAH | $23.52 | $30.16 | $0.24 | 29.2% | 7.6% |
$45.55 | $49.59 | $3.22 | 15.9% | 7.6%
CA | $27.87 | $32.63 | $0.25 | 18.0% | 7.6% |
$41.70 | $37.35 | $0.33 | -9.6% | 7.6%
$44.56 | $56.92 | $0.35 | 28.5% | 7.6%
Totals | 16.4% | 7.6% | |||
12/31/14 Stocks | Start | Current | Dividend | Pct Gain | R3K Gain |
CA | $30.83 | $32.63 | $0.00 | 5.9% | 1.1% |
$28.36 | $29.43 | $0.19 | 4.4% | 1.1%
$34.81 | $43.60 | $0.00 | 25.2% | 1.1%
$34.21 | $37.35 | $0.00 | 9.2% | 1.1%
IQNT | $19.87 | $17.96 | $0.00 | -9.6% | 1.1% |
Totals | 7.0% | 1.1% |
Wow, those are some good results. The stocks from 9/30 that I did not pick are now up 12.3%, so no longer "lucky". The stocks I did not pick from 12/31 are up 5.7%, again not lucky - just out performance all in. As another benchmark, my MFI Index is up 1.3% year to date.
It was just a week of good news. Here are some samples:
- Cisco's stock soars to a 7-year high as the company's turnaround takes hold
- King Digital "Candy Crushes" Q4 Earnings, Stock Up 20% After Hours
- NHTC Approved for Nasdaq Capital Markets Listing; Expands Board
- Qualcomm Settles Chinese Antitrust Charges, Ups Guidance
- Genworth Rebounds as Long-Term Care Results ‘Better Than Feared’
As I said, it was a very good week and virtually all the news was good.
Transactions
I did have my most active week in a while with transactions. I do not want to go overboard (recall step away from the batter), but these were largely successful and rational (in my opinion).
- I bought MNDO. This is a small cap Israeli firm that provides services to phone and cable companies. They have been growing nicely and will likely be announcing a substantial annual dividend soon. I expect that will be a catalyst.
- I sold my RIG that I had bought in early January. This was a very successful trade, netting 18% gain.
- I bought KING on Tuesday (prior to what I expected to be good earnings) and sold Friday (post stellar earnings) for a 23% gain.
- I bought BXE at $2.58. This is a small Oil & Gas company in Canada that Seth Klarman likes (Seth Klarman Buys Oil Company).
- I bought FSC post terrible earnings where they wrote down some investments and dropped their dividend. I felt they sold off too much and their x-CEO bought $7m worth (Fifth Street Finance (FSC) Stock Drops Today After First Quarter Earnings Miss).
Ok. On to next week. Have a great one everyone.
