Weekend Update - June 8th 2013

Saturday, June 8th 2013

1st week of the markets in June certainly was a bit more exciting.  Markets had best day in a couple months yesterday, I have to say I am not really sure why.  I guess I did not study the "jobs number" long enough.  But in the short term, markets going up or down is more about investor psychology than anything else.  However, over the longer term, market movements have to generally be correlated with growth in earnings of the corporations.  There has been some growth of earnings, but the two feel a bit disconnected.

Dividend Portfolio

This portfolio continues it's recent under-performance.  I think this is coming from two areas: (1) real estate type investments and (2) basic material investments.  I think both are core holdings and they are all still throwing off the dividends I expected, so I see no reason to make material changes on the sell side.  I will say my future buys may look to diversify holdings a bit more.

MFI Portfolio

This portfolio was hurt a bit this week by GA taking a pretty sharp drop. Probably lost about a point in total versus the index this week, still doing quite well.
