Great Week

Whatta week. Led by TRLG surging about 20%, my MFI portfolio passed the benchmark on Friday. Since news is good, I'll post my chart and current holdings first:

Reminder, the magenta line represts my cumulative gains week by week since I started. The Blue line is what I would have if I had just invested in Russell 3000 benchmark as a passive investor. Now here is my list of current holdings. They have really shot up recently.

Stock Thoughts

NOOF reports their earnings this week. I have to admit I am a wee bit apprehensive as their CFO is leaving in what was a strange announcement (New Frontier Media Announces CFO Karyn Miller to Leave Company After Appointment of Successor).

JTX fell back to earth on Friday. I thought the early 10% spike post-earnings on Thurday was a little irrational. It has all been given back.

THO was upgraded yesterday and went up nicely (Thor Shares Jump on Analyst Upgrade). It is now a double digit gainer for me. Do me a favor and go buy your parents an RV!

TRLG was an absolute rocket this week. It closed last Friday at $15.63. Yesterday it closed at $19.94. I don't have a calculator handy, but $4.30/$15.63 is over 25% (4/16). About $1.4M shares traded Wed, Thursday & Friday against an average volume of 360K. 6.6M shares (46% of float) were shorted in this stock. There wasn't much news, but there must be some rumors. Perhaps the senior management was seen meeting with GS? They did mention "strategic opportunities" once.

I did buy two MFI stocks outside of MFI this week. I am no longer calling them sidecars and I will not explicitly track their performance. I bought BPT, for their 10% dividend to give my portfolio a little ballast. Then I watched Cramer on Wednesday or Thursday and he was trying to guess what stocks will enter the Russell 2000 index in June. Just for kicks, I tried to guess if any top 100 stocks will enter the index in June. HURC seemed to me like a likely candidate. So I bought some shares as a short term trade ("Mad Money") in my IRA.

Do you use time-weighted IRR or Money weighted IRR?

also, I remember you raved about how PNCL did for you a while. Has it come down this much?

My IRR is based upon actual cash flows and when they occurred. So I supposed it is both money weighted and time weighted.

PNCL is now in 2nd year in my portfolio, so the 150% gain I had has been closed out and you are seeing the price movement since mid-May.

I "close" out all stocks after a year and then consider it a new stock even if I don't sell it. This way all sold stocks essentially have a one year term.
