Weekend Update - May 16th (aka high pollen day)

Weekend Update

Wow, they said this season was going to be a pollen tsunami. This morning is full force.  My nose is running, my eyes are itchy.  Not good. I have taken my Claritin... may reach for benedryl soon.

It is funny, usually I can tell you (without looking) if my stocks had a good week or a bad week.  This week, I had to look. I was up 1/2 a percent, which is pretty much on par with the markets.  But as you will see, it is my Select portfolio that is my high flyer.

MFI Select

Usually I start off my showing the 4 open tranches.  But this time I will show how the portfolio is doing in total and on a relative basis.  It has really exploded upwards, helped my stocks such as NHTC and CBI:

Check that out. Since May 1st, it has gone (assuming hypothetical $100k start) from $186k to $201k!  Officially a double now.  Very impressive considering started less than three years ago.  And beating the index by almost 49 points.  My August tranche has now pulled into the lead.  It is like an endurance race and my training over the long course of a year is paying off.

Of course my May 2015 tranche has stumbled out of the gate.  KORS reports pretty soon, we'll see what happens.  If it matters, GS is bullish (Can Kors Stock Pop? Goldman Thinks It Can).  CBI was up sharply (over 10% at one point) on rumors about a $15b project (One Factor Bringing Chicago Bridge & Iron (CBI) Stock Up).

MFI Formula

The formula picks are also hanging in there pretty well,  Had KING and CSCO report this week, and they were both solid.

You can see that NSU has been very strong in my March Portfolio.

Transactions

I did go on a bit of a shopping spree this past week.  None of these holdings are meant to be long term. I suppose one catalyst was the 13d forms that came out - I followed Seth Klarman on a couple stocks.

  • I doubled my MNDO position at $2.37
  • I bought BSQR at $5.69.  This is a small software company that has a lot of good metrics.
  • I bought KLXI at $44.43. This is a stock I have had on my watch list every since they spun off earlier this year. When I saw SK bought them, I jumped in.
  • I bought ATRA at $37.17. This is a biotech company that SK added to in Q1. Possibly a very short term hold. I have noticed when people realize SK buys a bio tech, it often spikes in the next week. I want to ride that wave.

I did get called out on my final UCO tranche on Friday at $8. I am officially out of that trade.  On these leveraged plays, you can make very good $ on these covered calls; but inherently I do not like holding leveraged ETFs. So it just isn't worth it for me.  I will likely stick more to covered calls on stocks I am willing to hold (like the one I have on CSIQ right now).
