Much better week. I was down 8.5% going into last week, now I am down 4.5%. That was all pretty much accomplished on Friday, where my entire portfolio was up almost 4%! That included 5 stocks up by over 10%, including SJT at almost 23%.
I also had a lot of activity yesterday as I began to retire my 1/30/15 MFI tranche and set up a new tranche for 2016.
MFI Select
Looking back, I was down 10.3% YTD a week ago, I am now down 10.5% (hmmm, not so good)!

For the record, here are all my closed tranches. This was the first negative:

So I have had 11 closed tranches with an average gain of 28.9%. The benchmark average has been 15.0%.
Here is how I have done in total, assuming a 100,000 start spread over first 4 tranches:
Category/Tranche | August | November | February | May | Total |
Initial Investment | 25,000 | 25,000 | 25,000 | 25,000 | 100,000 |
Current Tranche | -1.7% | 5.3% | -14.3% | -27.0% | -9.5% |
Previous Tranche | 11.2% | 69.4% | 8.5% | 18.3% | 46.2% |
Tranche -2 | 41.4% | 14.2% | 78.3% | 33.0% | 41.7% |
Tranche -3 | 14.1% | 43.7% | 0.0% | 0.0% | 0.0% |
MFI Overall Gain | 76.3% | 192.8% | 65.7% | 14.8% | 87.4% |
Current Balance | 44,087 | 73,209 | 41,426 | 28,706 | 187,428 |
R3K Current Tranche | -8.0% | -5.9% | -2.6% | -7.4% | -6.0% |
R3K Overall Gain | 46.0% | 48.4% | 33.2% | 24.2% | 37.9% |
R3K Balance | 36,491 | 37,089 | 33,303 | 31,051 | 137,934 |
Annualized IRR | 17.8% | 39.8% | 18.4% | 5.2% | 22.0% |
So the bottom right hand annualized IRR of 22.0% reflects the 11 closed tranches plus the open tranches which are generally doing worse. Next week, the -14.3% in the February/Current tranche cell of the table will drop down to the "Previous tranche" row.
MFI Formula
Recall that this is an approach I started at q3 of 2014. It is formula driven - stocks over $600m market cap from $100 screen that have a dividend of 2.4% or greater. So far, it has been in a dead heat with the benchmark. This year, it is down 4% (off 6.8% last week).
3/31/2015 | Start | Current | Dividend | Pct Gain | R3K Gain |
HRB | $31.99 | $34.05 | $0.60 | 8.3% | -7.5% |

Annualized IRR | -8.2% | 4.0% | -6.3% | -21.0% | -6.5% |
So a start with $1m is down to 937,973. The same amount started in IWV would be at 943,194. As I said, almost a dead heat.
MFI Micro
These are two micro portfolios I started in 2015. They are micro cap stocks and I have less invested here than "normal". They have done relatively well, both beating the benchmark:
8/28/2015 | Start | Current | Dividend | Pct Gain | R3K Gain |
VNCE | $8.50 | $5.17 | $0.00 | -39.2% | -3.3% |

MNDO | $2.58 | $2.36 | $0.00 | -8.5% | -5.8% |
Totals | - | 2.8% | -5.8% |
For the year, they are down 2.2%. Feels like a win.
Dividends/Warrants
The SJT pop really helped this group.
Div and Warrants | Start | Current | Dividend | Pct Gain | Pct Gain Last Week | Year End 2015 |
BAC-WTA | $5.86 | $4.25 | $0.00 | -27.5% | -33.5% | -3.6% |

REXI | $5.59 | $4.36 | $0.07 | -20.8% | -21.2% | -2.8% |
Totals | 0.5% | -4.7% | 6.2% |
Pretty telling to go from -4.7% to +0.5% in just a week. And of course, this portfolio is generating an ever increasing income stream as I reinvest all my dividends.
