MFI Weekend Update 12/15/17

MFI Weekend Update 12/15/17

Well, it looks like Tax Reform, like it or not, is a done deal.  The votes are there and the markets were very pleased on Friday.  Even the hard to please MFI stocks were up. My MFI stocks were up 1.04% on Friday and the MFI Index was up 1.25%.  Will this rally continue next week?  If I have a picture of Santa Claus next week instead of Buzz, the answer will have been yes.

You have found your way to the MFI Diary.  This is a blog following the investment approach described by Joel Greenblatt in The Little Book That Beats The Market.  I have been writing this blog and following his investment approach since early 2006.

I did create a guide recently for new readers to my blog that point you to some key/interesting posts. I encourage you to give it a whirl (Guide To New Readers).  (PS - let me know if this link does not work). Of course, I have to have a disclaimer - I am just a guy with a spreadsheet and not a stock advisor.  You should do your own due diligence before acting on anything you read here.

Any opinions you read are my own unless they end up being really bad.

The Past Week

It was a solid week overall, though I continue to lose ground to the Russell 3000.  But it is really, really hard not to be happy with 15% for the year.  Here is a table showing my results for the year and for the quarter:

 Component   YTD   4th Q
 Overall  +15.05% +1.36%
 MFI Select  +35.82% +9.34%
 MFI Formula  +19.45% +9.03%
 Miscellaneous  +0.99% -5.62%
 Dividend  +13.01% -0.72%
 R3K  +20.53% +6.07%
 MFI Index  +5.34% +1.02%
 GARIX  +9.56% +4.45%

The keen-eyed will see my MFI Select continues to be very satisfactory, now up almost 36% on the year.  My Misc continues to be my albatross, just up 1%.  My dividend portfolio, at 13% is strong when you consider I have some bond-like holdings and preferred stocks.  It is income first, capital appreciation 2nd.  But is was up 3% on the week. R3K shows you can just go with benchmark and do well.  Should I even be wasting my time?  GARIX is of course Gotham's MFI mutual fund and is a long/short fund.  It is actually my single largest holding, but I do not track it in my overall numbers.  Finally the 2nd worst number on the board is MFI Index at 5.3%. This is what you would have today if you'd bought the 50 stocks on the official list December 31st last year. Not. Very. Good.

MFI Select

As my readers know, I have two real money MFI portfolios.  MFI Select is the longest running.  I started it in August 2012.  It consists of 4 tranches, each tranche containing 5 stocks.  I give myself total free form on how to pick the stocks.  So usually they are from the official website screen, but I do run my own screen (which incidentally I am having trouble doing right now).  I actually have been investing in MFI stocks since Feb 2006, but I quit for a year in 2011 out of frustration at results,  My MFI Select reboot was born out of my studying what went wrong (too many really bad stocks as MFI stocks over time have tended to be more volatile).

Here are my 4 tranches and how they are doing against the Russell 3000 benchmark:

2/1/2017  Start   Current   Dividend   Pct Gain   R3K Gain

Pretty solid, n'est pas? 3 of the 4 tranches are leading R3K.  And only 2 of my 20 stocks are down more than 10% (jinxing them for sure).  Here is a table showing results all the way back:

Category/Tranche   August   November   February   May   Total
 Initial Investment         25,000             25,000           25,000        25,000         100,000
 Current Tranche  18.4% 19.2% 54.6% 3.0% 22.5%
 Previous Tranche  -0.1% 42.6% 10.7% 19.1% 23.7%
 Tranche -2  2.8% 8.0% -14.3% -25.2% -7.2%
 Tranche -3  11.2% 69.4% 8.5% 18.3% 26.8%
 Tranche -4  41.4% 14.2% 78.3% 33.0% 41.7%
 Tranche -5  14.1% 43.7% 0.0% 0.0% 14.5%
 MFI Overall Gain  118.2% 410.8% 183.7% 44.3% 189.2%
 Current Balance         54,550           127,707           70,918        36,064         289,239
 R3K Current Tranche  9.3% 4.2% 18.4% 12.3% 11.1%
 R3K Overall Gain  109.4% 113.6% 91.5% 79.2% 98.4%
 R3K Balance         52,352             53,412           47,881        44,803         198,448
 Annualized IRR  15.7% 37.8% 23.9% 8.3% 21.4%

So you can see the results of every single tranche in the interior of table (the first, August 2012 is August Tranche -5 and is 14.1%).  The table shows how a hypothetical $25,000 invested in each of the four tranches would have grown to right now (so for August the $25,000 would be $54,550). It also shows how $25,000 in the benchmark would have done (for August it would be $52,352). Finally, you can see my annualized IRR for each tranche and in total, so 15.7% for August and 21.4% in total.

This next table shows month by month how that hypothetical $100,000 from the above table has grown vs benchmark (note I say hypothetical, not because I have not had real gains, but I did not start with $100,000 and I have added additional funds along the way. But for simplification I do not show that here).

Here are how my stocks have done since 11/1:

You will note WTSC is not on here. That is because they no longer exist, they were bought.  And for simplicity (ok laziness) I did not add in dividends.

MFI Formula

This is my second MFI approach.  I started it in October 2014 and it also has 4 tranches with 5 stocks apiece.  It is the opposite of "select", all my stocks are picked by formula and a random number generator (yes, it took courage).  The formula approach is here (One Day To Next Formula Tranche).  Same tables.

Annualized IRR of 11.1% is not chicken feed, but not as good as Select.  But I do believe in my Formula approach and it is WAY out performing my MFI Index (my tracking of all MFI stocks).  So there is a definite improvement here.

month by month you can see the back and forth.  Right now a dead heat with the benchmark (which frankly many, many hedge funds would be happy with).  Then here is how stocks have done since 11/1 (I added in dividends this time):

Stock   Since 11/1   Current   Dividend   Change
 SYNT              23.25         25.57                       -   10.0%
 HPQ              21.47         20.92                  0.13 -1.9%
 GILD              74.84         75.57                  0.51 1.7%
 CSCO              34.62         38.19                       -   10.3%
 OMC              67.63         74.41                       -   10.0%
 GME              18.60         18.34                  0.38 0.6%
 CA              32.93         33.71                  0.34 3.4%
 DIN              47.51         49.13                  0.97 5.5%
 TGNA              20.17         22.71                  0.07 12.9%
 BKE              16.60         22.70                       -   36.7%
 RGR              51.50         52.50                  0.24 2.4%
                      -
 Average  8.3%

Been a good run.  Tax reform is definitely good for stocks (short term at least).

Dividends and Miscellaneous

It was a strong week for my dividend stocks.  They have been having a tough quarter, so perhaps a bit of reversion to the mean.

You can see TK, TGP and CPLP had strong weeks along with RILY.  But this portfolio is about the income. It does have a stretch yield of 6.4%, so there is some riskiness here.  KCLI has been a bit frustrating, it is a life insurer, way below book and should benefit greatly from tax reform. Yet a big zero.  I will be very patient, it is a large holding for me.

On the Misc front, not exactly knocking it out of the park.  I did continue my downsizing as I sold SN.  It is still a high risk portfolio, which thus far has yielded subpar returns.  I do have my "basket" portfolios of small banks and miners,  I plan to hold both of these longer term as I think inflation may become an issue and small banks should benefit a lot from lower taxes.

Miners off to a decent start, really had a good good week.

Have a great week - we're excited here, kids back home from colleges.
