Top 200 May 20th 2011

On the road again. I did run the top 200 over the weekend. My internet connection was so slow at the hotel... actually embarrassing. Not much other news. Friday was a bad day. NEWN went down a quarter post earnings and the markets were broadly down. I think with any sort of moderate downturn, I may go backinto the red for the first time in over a year. Sigh.

Transaction

I did sell CHKE on Friday. I had held them for a year. They went up about 15% for me (including dividends). That seems good until you realize the Russell 3000 was up about 25% in that stretch. I may re-buy them (I have actually not sold them but removed from my portfolio). But with my additions of BSQR and NVMI recently, I actually was one stock over. PM and UNTD some up in about 3 weeks, and at that time I may re-add CHKE

You can see NEWN is unavailable as they reported on Friday and there is a one day difference between on charts. NEWN will still be in my top 200, it is just likely the data is being updated

Marsh, for the Yahoo stock contest, how exactly are you going to account for a company that has a spinoff? I know that in last year's contest, you treated it as a dividend, but my question is whether you then include the price appreciation of the spinoff stock in the ultimate calculation. For example, let's say a stock is trading for $100, and spins off a small sub, and the cost basis is allocated as $90 for the parent and $10 for the sub. If the spin's stock trades up to $15, do you track that, or simply keep the $10 as the "dividend" amount? It makes a difference as to which stocks I would pick. And for the record, I would be in favor of keeping track of the appreciation/decrease of the spin as well in order to more accurately keep track of the total return...

Al

I did then include the spin off in the new numbers, so you would get credit for the spinoff appreciation.
