Ed's Talking Stock versus my Spiffy Fifty

As my faithful readers know, I read a blog written by Ed McGon (Ed's Talking Stock). While Ed is well-read, quite witty and reasonably knowledgeable about stocks, he is (as JG puts it) running through a dynamite factory with a lit match. He does not really have a strategy or a plan, but invests largely emotionally and based upon gut and some combination of technical and fundamental analysis. To his credit, he posts his portfolio daily. I started my "spiffy-fifty" portfolio in early December and have been tracking it versus Ed's helter-skelter approach. It has not been much of a contest.

I had another decent day today. And NEWN reported their earnings this evening... if the market was concerned about the delay, that should be eased. And the earnings were very strong... if you believe them (New Energy Systems Group Reports First Quarter 2011 Financial Results).

  • 44 cents per share (this is a 3.65 stock).
  • $10m in cash (a $51m stock)
  • guidance to earn about $1.70 per share.

Marsh -
Just happened upon your blog. I read Ed, too. I've commented before on his blog that what he's doing is idiotic (in a nice way - and I recall you have, too). When I did (2 mos ago?) he actually seemed to agree, said he'd change, but still continues to bet on his ultras and shorts, etc. I'm wondering if we need to do an intervention?
When he started his blog in July 2010 he made the ludicrous assertion that he wanted to be up 100% in a year. I'm sure by now he's down more than the 10 in your post.
It's a good, interesting blog, but I hate the watching a train wreck aspect.
Seriously, any ideas about an "intervention"?
