Top 200 January 9 2011

Great football weekend. Really enjoyed both games on Saturday. I would have preferred to see the Colts beat the Jets, but after a long lean stretch, it is hard not to be a bit happy for the Jets.

We do have a new stock this weekend on the lists: CNET. It is another of those Chinese stocks that looks too good to be true. I think it is fair to say I have had my fill of them, so I will not be a buyer with my 8% of cash. No ther new stocks as the list has been extremely stagnant of late. I suspect that as we head into earnings season, activity should pick up.

Hello,
I am just getting started with the Magic Formula system. I am mostly research it right now. I find your blog very helpful. I see you have been doing this since 2006. Generally are you happy with your results? Are you doing this on your own or are you using sites such as MagicDiligence?
You have a column heading labled IWV. What is that?
I am closing on a house in Dallas TX in a few weeks. I am thinking about using the proceeds to invest using the MFI. Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

I am certainly not qualified to provide advice. I am just "ok" with my results, in part because I have not been as much of an "investor" as I need to be.

MFI does seem to work is the main takeaway, but to my view nowhere close as well as shown in the book. So you should set expectations to perhaps beat the market by at most 3 points per year.

The second takeaway is to make your investment and then do not pay attention emotionally. You need to view as a portolio and know that some stocks will crash and there will be volatility. I have trouble following my own advice.

I think you are fine using the just the screen site, though Steve's Magicdiligence site is thorough... my studies have shown that so far he has not done any better than random stocks on the screen.

Finally IWV is the ETF for the Russell 3000 which I comoonly use as a benchmark.
