May 2016 Was A Good Time To Start

May 2016 MFI Thoughts

I was just kind of looking at my May 2016 numbers.  Whenever I start a new tranche, I also write down the five or ten stocks I considered and then rejected to see how they performed.

Generally, I think my selected do better than my rejections (a good thing I believe), but May 2016 rejections have been (in the words of Tony) Grrreat!

They are up almost 60% and we still have 5 months to run. And it wasn't like one stock is up 200%... they were all solid picks.  For a benchmark, The R3K is up 10.7%.  My five picks are up 23.9% (I know, nothing wrong with that).

Here are my five actual picks:

5/6/2016  Start   Current   Dividend   Pct Gain   R3K Gain
 BRCD  $7.97 $12.41 $0.11 57.1% 10.7%
 CBI  $37.82 $33.38 $0.00 -11.7% 10.7%
 HSII  $18.51 $22.45 $0.26 22.7% 10.7%
 RHI  $38.51 $47.42 $0.66 24.9% 10.7%
 UTHR  $107.99 $136.73 $0.00 26.6% 10.7%
 Totals  23.9% 10.7%

Here are the five rejections:

5/6/2016  Start   Current   Dividend   Pct Gain
 AAPL  $92.92 $109.95 $1.14 19.6%
 LDOS  $35.57 $52.38 $0.64 49.1%
 AGX  $33.83 $65.75 $1.00 97.3%
 AMAG  $19.85 $35.80 $0.00 80.4%
 IQNT  $15.85 $23.16 $0.32 48.1%
 Totals  58.9%

(note LDOS paid a special dividend of $13.64 shortly after 5/6, so I reduced my basis by that amount).

But it is good everywhere.  My dividend picks are up 16%. My tracking portfolio is up 15.7%.

We'll see what next five months bring.
