Update of My Spiffy 50 vs Ed's Talking Stock

I am sipping a cup of Java in the financial center of the world this morning. Despite the big sell-off yesterday, I can report the buildings are still standing here.

As my readers know, I follow another stock blog called Ed's Talking Stock. His investing approach is the antithesis of Magic Formula Investing. He buys, he sells, goes for leverage and many of his trades are based on either technicals or guts. If you read his blog, he comes across as very knowledgeable. Many people ask him for advice. There is no doubt he has a larger readership than me.

But he is struggling. He has extreme courage in that he posts his results monthly and generally daily. The month of May was terrible, down over 9% (Misery: Ed’s Portfolio Summary for May).

I set up a simple portfolio of 50 stocks (largely MFI) to track against him in early December. Here is how the comparison is thus far, not considering his extremely high trading costs:

So a 21 point thumping after almost exactly 6 months.

That being said, it is hard for me to celebrate as I am not doing as well as the spiffy 50. That really illustrates that we can easily be our own worst enemy in investing. I am up 0.8% for 2011 and my MFI is down a bit over 7% in 2011. I am hanging on by my fingertips to being in the black since I started in 2006.
