Weekend Update

Weekend Update

They said this was the best week since around Thanksgiving. But it sure didn't feel that way for me. I was down a nose over 3% as being over-weight in the Chinese stocks (also CHKE got hammered) was not favorable (nor has it been favorable since November). I am holding them the recommended year and by all measures they are tremendously cheap.

Here are my current holdings and how they are doing. You may notice a new stock I added this week (MNDO).

The observant reader will note that my open stocks have fallen behind the benchmark for the first time in quite a while. As I said, it wasn't a great week... for me. We'll see what happens over the next two weeks, many of my stocks will be announcing earnings before the end of February.

Ed's Talking Stock Update

Whenever I have a little pity party for not having a good week (though I will note that I was actually up 1.2% for all my stocks, only MFI was the laggard), I know that I have a little company (which misery loves). Poor Ed of Ed's Talking Stock continues to get crushed. He moved last week almost his entire portfolio into triple bear ETFs. When you make a move like that, you either need to be sure that you are right or else be using it as a hedge against other moves. I had him down about 4.4% on the week. My Spiffy 50 portfolio (set up December 3rd) continues to win handily in my own semi-private contest:

Transactions

I did buy a new stock the other day as I am still 4% in cash (after the purchase). I bought a newcomer to the screen, MNDO. It just came on the screen and it a small company with a $50m market cap. They actually pay a dividend (which loyal readers know is something I have been looking at closely). They are an Israeli company, and frankly (for whatever reason) I have had great success with Israeli companies (SNDK, NVMI, CEL and MAIL of late). MGIC was another Israeli company that I kicked myself many times for not buying. So I jumped on with MNDO at $2.72.

The Power of Love

Thank goodness I did not buy PWER a couple weeks ago as I said I was considering. There was a good reason that 45% of the shares were shorted as they went down 21% Friday post earnings (Power-One Is Dead Money: Analysts). Perhaps a buying opportunity down the road?
