Another Month in the Books

Wow, it has been more than a month since I posted and Blogger has a whole new look.  Not sure if I like it.  Let me catch people up on how things are going.

  1. My dividend portfolio continues to do pretty well. I am up 10.7% on the year, hard to complain about that.
  2. My broader portfolio is up 8.6%.  I was clearly hurt by the recent Genworth debacle.  They announced their Australian IPO was going to be on hold due to losses.  Their CEO stepped down, and Marty Klein (a guy I worked with in my first job out of college is the interim CEO). Marty is a VERY smart guy, so hopefully he can turn the ship around. I also asked some friends of mine in Australia what is going on in the housing market down there. They were a bit surprised at GNW's problems and said that other companies were doing ok.
  3. I have kind of stopped tracking MFI.  I still have my MFI Index, which is up 7.4% on the year.  But I have stopped my mechanical portfolios and my monthly tracking portfolios.  They take a lot of time and I didn't think anyone cared.
I did buy back into AAPL at $557. I should have sold them right after earnings, when they spiked sharply.

My latest big buy on the dividend side is Vivendi, a French conglomerate that pays about an 8% dividend and was bought by Seth Klarman.  Here is the link (Seth Klarman's Vivendi Investment Is a No Brainer).

I also sold CEL and RTN.  Finally, I added to my MPC position as I thought they had a great quarter and they are talking about spinning off their pipelines (Marathon Petroleum may consider IPO of pipeline assets) into an MLP.  I think that portion is way under-valued and that move may unlock that value.

Other major news in my stocks, PRE had a great quarter PartnerRe Swings to YoY Profit.  It is my single largest dividend stock, so I have enjoyed a nice run-up.

WBK seemed to have pretty decent earnings.  I think they have announced their May dividend, but I can not seem to find the amount.  I sent an email to investor relations.

STD is struggling, it looks like first instinct to sell them back at end of January was right... too bad I bought them back.  The good news is they are changing their ticker from STD to SAN!
