MFI + Dividends = ?

New Investment Approach

This weekend I will talk about where I am going with my investing. My intent is to move about 75% of my investments to stocks, mutual funds, ETFs or CEFs that pay dividends.

Why do that?

There are several reasons:
  1. My studies of MFI have shown that dividend paying stocks have out-performed the broader universe of MFI stocks substantially.
  2. I work in the insurance industry and am very comfortable picking insurance stocks, which generally pay dividends.
  3. I turn 52 next week and I want to start building a portfolio that will allow me to have an income stream for helping with reirement.
  4. I need a larger proportion of bonds and utilities for balance to my portfolio.
  5. Mentally and Emotionally dividend stocks are easier for me to hold. I have all my dividend stocks set to buy additional shares with reinvested dividends. So when a stock has dropped, I can rationalize that I am simply getting more shares with my reinvestments rather than think the sky is falling!
Basic Format and Scorekeeping

As readers of this blog know (if you peruse my 1000+ postings), I do like to keep score. So we are not starting at ground zero, I have gone back to March of 2010 when I really began thinking and implementing a dividend investing strategy with reinvested dividends. I will be keeping track in two primary ways:
  1. Each time I buy a stock (whether the initial purchase or reinvested dividend) I mark what the Russell 3000 is selling at. I will then create a table comparing how my stock has done vs that benchmark.
  2. I will also do a cash flow analysis where I literally enter the amount of cash invested, cash taken out and ending balance by day. Then I can calculate an annualized IRR (Internal rate of return) which essentially is a metric akin to an APR when you buy a car or house.
I will be showing dollar amounts on many of my holdings data. This are not my actual amounts (I prefer to not reveal that sort of personal data), but rather a multiple. I think actual share counts and dollare figures make for more interesting reading.

Finally, I will write a little commentary on most of the stocks that I hold. This is NEVER meant to be a recommendation or a great analysis. But simply to provide a little color on why I own the stock.

The Tables!

I know, I know... enough blather. What are you holding? How are you doing?
