Quick Look At April 1st, 2018 Tranche

Quick Look At April 1st, 2018 Tranche

Thought it might be interesting to look at my April 1st, 2018 MFI Formula tranche.  It is my next tranche to approach one year finish line.

As a reminder, MFI Formula stocks are picked entirely by a formula and a random number generator.  That makes it easy to also look at the stocks the random number generator didn't pick.  Without further ado, here are my five stocks:

4/3/2018  Start   Current   Dividend   Pct Gain   R3K Gain
 AMGN  $166.46 $188.34 $5.28 16.3% 8.6%
 VIAB  $29.20 $29.15 $0.60 1.9% 8.6%
 GILD  $72.71 $67.59 $1.71 -4.7% 8.6%
 TUP  $47.32 $29.73 $2.04 -32.9% 8.6%
 EGOV  $13.29 $17.39 $0.24 32.7% 8.6%
 Totals  2.7% 8.6%

So, it seems likely to end up losing to the benchmark.  TUP is a stinker (down over 30%) and it is generally a kiss of death to have a stinker within the 5 picks.

Here are the stocks that didn't get picked by random number generator:

Ticker Start Current Dividend Change
TGNA         10.92         12.27             0.28 14.9%
NTRI         27.20         43.33             1.00 63.0%
OMC         71.27         75.00             2.60 8.9%
IPG         22.67         23.38             0.94 7.3%
HPQ         21.14         23.28             0.64 13.2%
CJREF           4.56           4.50             0.54 10.4%
BKE         22.00         17.66             1.00 -15.2%
HRB         24.55         24.10             0.75 1.2%
Average 13.0%

Pretty good, you can see that with no stinker, approach is quite satisfactory.

Now here are the stocks I had from April 2017 and how they ran off:

Ticker Start Current Dividend Change
GILD         73.14         67.59             2.28 -4.5%
CSCO         40.17         49.43             1.00 25.5%
OMC         71.27         75.00             2.60 8.9%
SYNT         25.16         41.00             0.94 66.7%
BKE         22.00         17.66             1.00 -15.2%
Average 16.3%

Wow.  See why I like MFI Formula?

TUP and BKE are stinkers because they yield over 5%. Always avoid these stocks!
