Corus Entertainment - Nice Rebound

Corus Entertainment - Nice Rebound

As my readers know, I do allow myself to buy multiple positions, at various points in time, into my MFI holdings.  Some people don't like that as it can be concentration of risk.  I get that, but if viewed over my entire portfolio: MFI, non-MFI, retirement, mutual funds etc... a single, albeit multiple position might get to 3 or 4% of everything.  So still not that much concentration.

CJREF (Corus Entertainment) has been on the lists since July 2017.  That was early.  They were having financial trouble.  At the end of June, 2018 they finally cut their monthly dividend and switched to a quarterly dividend.  That was actually the buy signal.

Here is performance depending on when you bought (assumes you sold after holding one year):

Date Start Current Change
7/28/2017  $    9.29  $    3.10 -66.6%
8/25/2017  $    9.05  $    2.85 -68.5%
9/29/2017  $    8.68  $    3.27 -62.3%
10/27/2017  $    7.56  $    3.68 -51.3%
11/24/2017  $    7.69  $    3.73 -51.5%
12/29/2017  $    7.83  $    3.50 -55.3%
1/26/2018  $    6.17  $    4.43 -28.2%
2/23/2018  $    5.52  $    4.62 -16.3%
3/29/2018  $    4.09  $    4.62 12.9%
4/27/2018  $    4.42  $    4.62 4.6%
5/25/2018  $    4.67  $    4.62 -1.2%
6/29/2018  $    3.48  $    4.62 32.7%
7/27/2018  $    2.95  $    4.62 56.4%
8/31/2018  $    2.80  $    4.62 64.8%
9/28/2018  $    3.22  $    4.62 43.6%
10/26/2018  $    3.62  $    4.62 27.6%
11/30/2018  $    3.67  $    4.62 25.9%
12/31/2018  $    3.50  $    4.62 32.0%
1/25/2019  $    4.43  $    4.62 4.3%

Now if you bought one or two early positions, you got your head handed to you on a platter... down 50%+.  But the bought positions post the dividend cut are up an average of 35%.

There is nothing harder in investing than having a position that is down 50% and bellying up to the bar and doubling down.  That is one reason I am using a random number generator for part of my portfolio and considering using it for everything.  At times, we can be our own worst enemy.

In my 2/1/19 portfolio, I did end up doubling down on WDC.  It was down 46% for my 2/1/18 tranche.  I decided to keep it and then more than doubled my share count.

Finally, since I am excited about CJREF, here are my three MFI tranches that own it:

8/15/2018  Start   Current   Dividend   Pct Gain   R3K Gain
 AGX  $39.45 $46.83 $0.50 20.0% -3.6%

 SGH  $31.12 $27.98 $0.00 -10.1% -3.6%

(that +52% is certainly helping!)
