First Week Of New Tranche

First Week Of New Tranche

Obviously one week cannot tell you where a investment for a year will end up. Still it always seems nicer to get off to a good start rather than a bad start.  Speaking of bad starts, it was a bad week to start a new tranche.  The Russell 3000 dropped 1.5%. And the Russell 2000 (which I sometimes think might be a truer reflection of types of stocks in my MFI portfolios) dropped 2.4%!

Here is table showing my five picks (they fared relatively well):

10/2/2018  Start   Current   Dividend   Pct Gain   R3K Gain
 CJREF  $3.36 $3.41 $0.00 1.5% -1.3%
 GILD  $78.13 $76.24 $0.00 -2.4% -1.3%
 IPG  $22.80 $23.35 $0.00 2.4% -1.3%
 PETS  $31.56 $30.35 $0.00 -3.8% -1.3%
 VIAB  $32.21 $32.60 $0.00 1.2% -1.3%
 Totals  -0.2% -1.3%

The rejects (meaning the stocks Mr Random didn't pick for me) were down 0.7% (BPT, a stock I didn't want was up 3.8%).  Finally, the runoff (the five stocks I sold) were down 1.6%.

Looking Forward

My next tranche to hit a year will be my 11/15/17 MFI Select tranche.  Here is where it stands:

11/15/2017  Start   Current   Dividend   Pct Gain   R3K Gain
 MSGN  $16.67 $26.82 $0.00 60.9% 13.6%
 CELG  $100.60 $87.27 $0.00 -13.3% 13.6%
 EVC  $5.78 $4.86 $0.20 -12.5% 13.6%
 SIMO  $46.88 $51.32 $0.90 11.4% 13.6%
 VIAB  $24.41 $32.60 $0.80 36.9% 13.6%
 Totals  16.7% 13.6%
With the help of MSGN, it looks to have good shot at being a winner.  Go Knicks!  The five stocks I didn't pick (NTES, FOXA, DLX, AMGN and AGX) are just barely above breakeven. So I picked well (although FOXA was great, up over 60%).

But the runoff (my five stocks I sold in Nov of 2017) are up about 18%... so I could have just held and been great (MPAA, AMGN, CA, RHI and ATHM).

Early Thoughts

Market may go through some turmoil between now and mid November. But here are some names I like.

SGH, KLAC, DLX, WDC, CASA and FTSI for starters.  I may have to consider a few out of favor chinese stocks (like YY is at $78 and I sold them at $118). CAAP continues to look cheap from my May tranche.  Then even a couple of the trusts, SJT and PBT.  I like the energy space.
