Top 200 November 18th 2011

Just a few days to Thanksgiving. The market always seems to go up the week of Thanksgiving, we'll see if that trend continues or Europe and the Supercommittee continue to rule the roost. I sit here at the kitchen table on a glorious Sunday morning eating my Apple-Cinnamon Cheerio knock-offs and my New England French Roast coffee. Life is pretty good despite Indiana losing yesterday 55-3 (ouch)!

I noticed where ITT is in the top 100. I think that is in error as the company just split into three parts and I don't think in the formula that the historical earnings have been split three ways. The ITT spinoff is straight out of Greenblatt's 1st book. I am not sure which is the one to buy, but I suspect the defense component will be the one under pressure.

Comp With Official List

As my readers know, I compare my list with the official list. I continue to get the same discrepancies, GTAT due to name change (it clearly belongs on the list) and MDF, which I rank as "financial", but perhaps with their purchase of CNU they are smaller on the financial side. If I remember next week, I will turn on a manual switch to have them automatically entered.

New Stocks on the Block

I also track every week what stocks are new to the top 30 over 50 and top 50 over 50 lists in the past 52 weeks. We do have some newbies this week.

Top 30: ASYS, CPIX and NBIX. ASYS is one I have been saying should be there for about a year now, so good to see the official sight finally recognize the fact. CPIX and NBIX have been on the top 50 list and apparently worked their way up.

Top 50: Just ASYS.

Dividend Portfolio Results

As my gentle readers know, I have pretty much given up on MFI for the time being and moved towards dividend investing/reinvesting. It seems to suit me psychologically better, I have had very few transactions since I made the switch (and the one I made was a mistake, selling CMTL). While I do "believe" that over time MFI is still likely to work, it is too volatile for me and as I approach retirement, I wanted to build out a steady income stream.

The open stocks in my dividend portfolio are under-performing the Russell 3000 a bit, but I have done better since I started (including closed stocks). Here is my portfolio and performance (note I do show dollar and share amounts, but they have been multiplied by a factor to protect my true holdings).

Stocks X Dividend

It was a busy dividend collecting week as MSFT and PRE went x-dividend. Then I also found out in retrospect about $1.80 PVD dividend. SLF goes x-dividend on Monday.

I also have some buy orders on four dividend stocks should the market have a flash crash. Two oil companies (BP and STO), along with MFI favorite PDLI (which I kick myself for selling last spring at $5 a share) and DD.
