Hard to believe it is March already. That means it is time to start looking forward to my next tranche about to hit anniversary date and the universe of stocks to replace it.
As a refresher, my MFI Formula approach has a series of steps to decide the five stocks (perhaps like the Ten Duel Commandments in Hamilton).
- The day of expiration, run a top 50 > 120m market cap from official screen.
- Filter out the bottom 17 stocks per market cap in that list.
- Filter out stocks with dividend yields <2 .4="" dividends="" do="" include="" li="" special="">
- Review list and if desired, throw out one more name.
- Run random number generator to pick 5 stocks from the remaining stocks. 2>
Easy-peasy. So here is the tranche about to expire. It has been very good:
4/1/2017 | Start | Current | Dividend | Pct Gain | R3K Gain |
BKE | $18.45 | $21.30 | $2.75 | 30.3% | 15.2% |
CSCO | $33.76 | $44.06 | $1.16 | 34.0% | 15.2% |
GILD | $67.50 | $78.69 | $1.56 | 18.9% | 15.2% |
OMC | $85.53 | $75.65 | $1.65 | -9.6% | 15.2% |
SYNT | $16.76 | $27.31 | $0.00 | 62.9% | 15.2% |
Totals | 27.3% | 15.2% |
Did I get lucky with Mr Random? Enquiring minds want to know. I did. The five stocks Mr Random excluded were CA, GME, HPQ, PBI and RGR. In aggregate they are up about 3%. 27% looks much better. Thank you lady luck (as of today).
Here is what I would get if I picked today:
First the 50 stocks from screen 9I would need to review dividends):

Then the top 33 by market cap is everything over 563m. Then also filter for dividend > 2.4% and left with:
Number | Ticker | Market Cap | Price | Dividend | Yield |
1 | AGX | 628 | 40.40 | 1.00 | 2.48% |

9 | TUP | 2,531 | 49.58 | 2.72 | 5.49% |
Wow, short list right now. Let us say I do not toss any. I then run random number generator:
Random # | Stock |
6 | GME |
3 | CSVI |
1 | AGX |
2 | HRB |
5 | EVC |
That would be that. Who is CSVI anyway? I need to look. But that is all for now. Hope it is clear.
