Greetings from Pittsburgh. In the Steel City to visit our son. Retirement is great, just pick up and travel whenever we feel like it. We will head to Nashville next. We are running a 5K here tomorrow and one in Maryville TN next week as we try to run a 5K in all 50 states.
You have found your way to the MFI Diary, a blog where I let readers know my thoughts and performance on real life, real dollar Magic Formula Portfolios (based of course on "The Little Book The Beats The Market" by Joel Greenblatt. I also spend some effort tracking hypothetical portfolios based on downloads from the official website going back to January 2006.
Of course, I have to have a disclaimer - I am just a guy with a spreadsheet and not a stock advisor. You should do your own due diligence before acting on anything you read here.
Any opinions you read are my own unless they end up being really bad.
The Past Week
Before I get into my stocks, it was a very good week for MNKD, a small specialty pharma in my tracking portfolios. It rocketed up 132% on the week and is in 6 of my 12 open MFI tracking portfolios at an average of +226%!
Here is my new chart showing YTD results and 4th quarter results. Since we are a week into Q4, the Q4 results = past week.
Component | YTD | 4th Q |
Overall | +14.61% | +0.97% |
MFI Select | +25.11% | +0.72% |
MFI Formula | +10.89% | +1.21% |
Miscellaneous | +9.36% | +2.20% |
Dividend | +13.97% | +0.12% |
R3K | +15.05% | +1.25% |
MFI Index | +5.25% | +0.93% |
GARIX | +5.64% | +0.72% |
I did start a new tranche this week. Hard to be unhappy with a 0.8% week... but it is trailing.
10/1/2017 | Start | Current | Dividend | Pct Gain | R3K Gain |
DIN | $43.14 | $45.04 | $0.00 | 4.4% | 1.3% |
GILD | $82.85 | $82.14 | $0.00 | -0.9% | 1.3% |
GME | $20.50 | $20.02 | $0.00 | -2.3% | 1.3% |
HPQ | $20.22 | $20.58 | $0.00 | 1.8% | 1.3% |
OMC | $74.80 | $75.42 | $0.00 | 0.8% | 1.3% |
Totals | 0.8% | 1.3% |
You can see why my Misc did so well this week. My 3 warrants holdings all popped
BAC Warrants: +6%
ROSE Warrants: +31%
DSKE Warrants: +12%.
I did miss a huge gainer in my Misc portfolio. I had bought ITEK at 97 cents when they were trading below cash. I then sold for virtually no gain when they merged with another firm. This week they shot up to $2.72! C'est la vie.
MFI Select
Regular readers of my blog know that I maintain two real money MFI portfolios. The first is MFI Select, which consists of 4 tranches, each with five stocks that I buy and hold for a year. I have been running this portfolio since August 2012.
Here is how the stocks did last week:

So, I laid an egg in May. But other three tranches continue to look good. I have two doubles, ATHM and YY. I guess not more than a month left on 11/15 tranche.
Here is a table showing overall results:

MFI Formula
I started this approach in October 2014. It uses a formula and random number generator instead of "selection". It has not been as successful (yet) as my Select approach.

Actually a very good week. It is interesting that even though I have 20 spots (5 x 4), I only have 11 names in this portfolio. This is the nature of random number generator and the fact that same names often repeat themselves with my formula approach.

You'll see my annualized IRR is much lower here, 9.1%. My current tranches are up an aggregate of 6.9% versus 7.7% for benchmark. While that is not as good as I'd like, recall that my MFI tracking portfolios are trailing by about 3.5 percentage points, so relatively my formula approach is hanging in there.

Recall that these tables are a bit hypothetical in how I roll them up. They assume I started with $100,000 spread over four tranches and never added more money. In reality, I did not start with $100,000 and at times (especially this year), I have added money at anniversary dates.
Miscellaneous & Dividend Portfolios
My dividend portfolio was not so hot this week (on a relative basis). Recall that this portfolio is constructed to produce income for my retirement and it does have bond funds and preferred stocks. So in really good weeks, it is not a surprise that it lags.

Pretty not exciting. But if I can actually get the 6.3% yield and just have the values stay relatively constant, then I am happy.
On the Misc side, I already mentioned the warrants holdings did very well. FIX continues to be a solid play, up 3.6% this week. So my two hurricane reconstruction plays, BLDR and FIX are each up overall about 10%. Other stocks I considered were WY (4.9%), BECN (11.7%) and USG (7.9%).
Then smaller cap plays HIL and WLFC also had good weeks.
Have a great weekend everyone.
