Well, under a month to go for my April 1st, 2018 MFI formula tranche. As a reminder to my gentle readers, I have 4 real $ "MFI Formula" tranches, which I buy and hold for a year. This approach is a subset/filtering of the official MFI approach. It has worked reasonably well since I started in October 2014 (reasonably well meaning I am beating the market).
Here are the 5 stocks in the tranche:
4/3/2018 | Start | Current | Dividend | Pct Gain | R3K Gain |
AMGN | $166.46 | $191.16 | $5.28 | 18.0% | 9.8% |
VIAB | $29.20 | $29.45 | $0.60 | 2.9% | 9.8% |
GILD | $72.71 | $66.01 | $1.71 | -6.9% | 9.8% |
TUP | $47.32 | $29.36 | $2.04 | -33.6% | 9.8% |
EGOV | $13.29 | $17.05 | $0.24 | 30.1% | 9.8% |
Totals | 2.1% | 9.8% |
So while my MFI Formula approach is beating the benchmark, you can see this specific tranche is not. Obviously, TUP, aka "company that recently sliced dividend by 50%" is the albatross. We will see where we stand in a month.
As people may remember, I use a random number generator to pick the five stocks from the filtered list. Sadly, Mr Random was not so kind to me. The 8 stocks I didn't pick are up 12% (lead by NTRI at +60% and TGNA up 37%).

I'd have to go back and check, but 9 stocks has to be one of the lowest totals I have seen recently. I do allow myself to wean out one name... I'll probably regret the choice, but GME just seems to toxic to hold until they cut their divvy. I don't want a TUP part 2.
I will definitely be adding funds in the quarter as I move a larger and larger asset allocation to MFI. But I think I'll stay with 5 names (as opposed to MFI Select which I am broadening to 7).
Hmmm, looking at these stocks... I think SYX should be included. I include special dividends and my recollection is they paid one in December. So up to 10!
