Eight times a year, I hit a one year anniversary date of one of my MFI tranches. At this point, I sell my five current holdings and pick five new stocks. I will also increase my $ commitment by about 30%.
The tranche hitting it's anniversary is my MFI Formula, April 3rd, 2017 tranche. It was a very good tranche, up 21.3% versus 11.0% for the benchmark. In a large part, it was "luck". Recall my Formula approach is just that, a formula with a random number generator. The five stocks Mr Random gave me did very well. But the five stocks that Mr Random excluded were down 5% (largely due to the crashing GME, downabout 38%). So no time to get over confident. Here is my expired tranche:
4/1/2017 | Start | Current | Dividend | Pct Gain | R3K Gain |
BKE | $18.45 | $22.00 | $2.75 | 34.1% | 11.0% |
CSCO | $33.76 | $41.01 | $1.16 | 24.9% | 11.0% |
GILD | $67.50 | $73.14 | $2.13 | 11.5% | 11.0% |
OMC | $85.53 | $71.27 | $2.25 | -14.0% | 11.0% |
SYNT | $16.76 | $25.16 | $0.00 | 50.1% | 11.0% |
Totals | 21.3% | 11.0% |
Sweet, right? I will sell OMC today to harvest ST Capital losses and sell the other 4 on Wednesday. Of course, I will run my screen today... so if I get any repeats, I will not sell but rather will buy/sell as needed to hit required investment per stock.
I like to use anniversary dates to review all closed tranches for the approach. So here is a listing of all closed MFI Formula tranches:

You can peruse the tables and see the April 2017 was one of my best. Of my 11 closed tranches, I have "won" 6 and "lost 5. As regular readers know, my Formula approach has basically been a push with the benchmark - which given performance of value indices and MFI in general since 2014 is not a bad outcome.
Running My Screen
As a refresher, here are the steps I take in creating a MFI Formula tranche:
- Run 50 over $130m screen from official website (have recently increased from original $100m as I believe this amount should be indexed somewhat with the market).
- Take the 34 largest stocks from this list by market cap.
- From that subset, take stocks with dividend yields (either special or regular) greater than 2.4%.
- Review list and I can discard one stock.
- Run a random number generator and pick 5 stocks from remaining stocks.
- Buy and hold for a year.
Ok, here is the official website screen:

The top 34 stocks (by market cap) are AGX at 633m and greater. Then filtering that group for dividend yield of 2.4% or greater gives me:

I see GME is not on the list, they probably have not gotten their recent 10-K finalized through Compustat. At this point, I allow myself to throw out a name. But I will accept them all... VIAB will likely be on sale today with CBS news.
So now I run random number generator to get 5 of this 13.
Random # | Stock |
1 | AMGN |
5 | GILD |
8 | EGOV |
12 | TUP |
13 | VIAB |
Ok, deep breath. Always some here that I am not crazy about. But formula is formula. Looking back a year, GILD is a holdover. I will undoubtedly buy some more shares to meet 30% bump. TUP and EGOV are new to me. AMGN is in my January 2nd tranche. VIAB is in my November MFI Select tranche.
Final Steps
I will buy my shares sometime today. The prices I get will be the official starting prices. I will sell OMC from previous tranche today and the other three stocks (but not GILD) tomorrow. I will note the Russell 3000 price at the time I make my purchases today as well.
Thanks for reading.
