At the start of the year 10 of the 11 MFI tracking portfolios were leading the benchmark. A week ago, it was down to 6 out of 11.
Here is how it looks this morning:
| 3/24/2016 | 24.5% | 20.4% | 1 |
| 4/22/2016 | 10.4% | 16.4% | 0 |
| 5/27/2016 | 15.5% | 15.9% | 0 |
| 6/30/2016 | 15.6% | 15.6% | 0 |
| 7/29/2016 | 10.0% | 11.2% | 0 |
| 8/26/2016 | 11.1% | 11.2% | 0 |
| 9/30/2016 | 10.7% | 10.8% | 0 |
| 10/28/2016 | 12.0% | 13.3% | 0 |
| 11/25/2016 | 2.0% | 7.7% | 0 |
| 12/30/2016 | 0.6% | 6.3% | 0 |
| 1/27/2017 | 1.0% | 3.8% | 0 |
| 2/24/2017 | -0.1% | 0.5% | 0 |
| Average 12 | 9.4% | 11.1% |
So first column of % in MFI. Second column is benchmark. A "1" is MFI leading. So we are now trailing 11 of the 12. What is going on? Let us look at the 12/30/16 tracking portfolio (which comprises my MFI Index):

To be a mere 2+ months in and 12 of the 50 names are already 10%+ losers is tough.
I don't know. It is frustrating. The poor showing is also reflected in my real life MFI portfolios:
| Component | YTD |
| Overall | +4.79% |
| Select | +5.71% |
| Formula | +0.54% |
| Miscellaneous | +11.62% |
| Dividend | +5.20% |
| R3K | +6.32% |
| MFI Index | +0.43% |
So select has been pretty good, up 5.7%. But formula mirrors the Index, up 0.5%. The struggle is indeed real. Interestingly, GARIX is up 3.6% (it is a short/long fund run by Gotham).
Oh well. It is a marathon, not a sprint.
