Good morning everyone. Listening to
Tower of Power
this Saturday morning. Always gets my weekend started right. How did I not know this band "back in the day"?It is super bowl weekend, in the event you were unaware. This Cowboy's fan in New England will be rooting heartily for the Falcons.
As my followers know, this is a blog I have been keeping since 2006 following both my personal (real money) investing in so called Magic Formula Investing from "The Little Book That Beats the Markets" by Joel Greenblatt. This blog also tracks hypothictical investments (following rules and screens in the book) and I have even created an MFI Index which gets reconstituted once a year.
I have two approaches to MFI, (1) Select and (2) Formula. The first is free form and I have been using since August 2012. The second is formulatic/random and started October 2014. I actually started in 2006 and did ok, but then started picking too many speculative stocks from the screen and pulled out for a year or so and came back with new and improved approach (which has actually worked well as you will see).
I also will share a little bit about my dividend portfolio and "Misc" portfolio, which really are unrelated to MFI.
Here is a quick table that shows how I am doing so far this year. Note that this does include some cash (which dampens my returns) as I have planned to increase amount to MFI (and dividends) in 2017. So this will not tie to my other tables which assume always fully invested.
Component | YTD |
Overall | +3.62% |
Select | +2.80% |
Formula | +1.14% |
Miscellaneous | +10.01% |
Dividend | +4.11% |
R3K | +2.69% |
MFI Index | +1.06% |
So you can see in total, I have about 100 basis points on index, which is good considering I started year a bit more than 20% cash. The MFI Index is lagging a bit. Ironically, my non-MFI approaches (Dividend and Miscellaneous) have been the rock stars. But it is just February 4th. Long way to go.
MFI Select
It was a good week for my Select stocks, up almost 2%. Helped in part by my five new names I bought 1/31 and promptly went up 4.6%. Here are all my Select stocks and how they did during the week. Note the average is a straight average and does not consider my $ in each stock varies:

So now that I closed the 2/1/16 tranche, looking pretty strong except for May. Here is table showing tranches and returns over time:

So you can look at November (which has been my best series of tranches) is up 241.8% since 11/15/12. That works out to 33.8% per year. Not bad. Overall, this approach is tracking at a very snappy 19.4% return per year. Here is a table showing month by month (assuming we started at 100,000 spread over 4 tranches):

So here you can see I am up 3.6% for the year (better than the 2.8% in initial table as this one does not have cash drag).
MFI Formula
This approach is by formula. I screen to 50 stocks > 100m. I then take top 2/3 market caps that have a dividend yield of at least 2.4% and pick randomly from that list (usually about 10 names). While backtesting shows this approach would do very well, it has only been "meh" since I started with real money in October 2014. Here are same series of tables.

This week was crushed by PBI, down 17% on earnings/guidance. As I preach here, MFI stocks are much more volatile than "normal" stocks and avoiding stinkers is key.

So even with PBI debacle, you can see my current tranches are up 10.1% versus 8.8% for R3K. But overall, it is a virtual push (14.8% v 14.9%).

Dividend Stocks
I did sell SBRA on Friday. It was up over 16% and I have convinced myself that MPW is better in that space. I will wait to see if I can get a better entry point.

Obviously PSXP is the high-flyer so far this year. I think part of that is the Dakota pipeline, which I think is part of joint venture. Some controversy there. DSL, CSQ and AOD have all been very strong as well and recall these stocks are listed in size order.
Miscellaneous
I do not talk about these stocks much here, but they had an insanely good week (up 2.7%). I have been allocating some to covered call plays on gold mining ETFs. It is highly volatile but has been extraordinarily profitable so far this year (up 59%). Also my BAC Warrants, my single largest position is up 10% this year (and SPCB is up 12%).
