Dividend Stocks Making a Comeback?

Return Of The Dividend Stocks?

I commented earlier today how my MFI Formula portfolio has been faring pretty well in 2016.  Overall, I am up 4.5% this year... that compares to R3K being down 1.1%.  I am also  seeing the dividend component of my MFI tracking portfolios do "better".  The 12 open portfolios are down an average of 2.9%, whilst the overall open tracking portfolios are down 6.6%.

Here is a table comparing:

Date MFI R3K Dividend
3/27/2015 -16.2% -2.0% -9.5%
4/24/2015 -19.2% -4.7% -18.4%
5/29/2015 -18.1% -4.2% -11.6%
6/26/2015 -14.0% -4.3% -9.1%
7/30/2015 -6.6% -4.3% -4.1%
8/28/2015 -3.6% 1.2% 2.4%
9/25/2015 0.2% 4.2% 4.0%
10/30/2015 -6.8% -2.6% -0.5%
11/27/2015 -4.6% -3.6% -0.8%
12/31/2015 0.0% -1.1% 2.3%
1/29/2016 6.2% 4.9% 7.0%
2/26/2016 3.5% 4.1% 4.0%
Average 12 -6.6% -1.0% -2.9%

So the dividend approach for open portfolios is trailing R3K.  But that is all from 3/27/15 to 6/26/15 tranches.  Since then, the good guys are winning by 1.5 percentage points.  Not a stomp, but at this time a win is a win.

  1. Nice couple of posts with interesting numbers!

What would be fun for me to see is your MFI select go against MFI Formula. On March 31 you do
your 5 MFI select and then you do 5 MFI formula. Repeat on June 30th and again on Sept. 30 and finally Dec. 31st. It might be a real horse race when using the same time frames.

What is your guess based on limited information?

  2. John, my MFI select has had a pretty good track record since the 8/2012 reboot. I'd have to give it the nod.
